Illuminating Our Future: UB Plastics’ Major LED Lighting Upgrade
At UB Plastics, sustainability is a key component to our manufacturing future. From implementing closed-loop solutions that reduce waste to using recycled materials in key products, we continually seek ways to minimise our environmental impact whilst maintaining the cost and quality our customers expect.
Today, we’re excited to share details of our latest sustainability initiative: a five-figure investment in a comprehensive factory-wide LED lighting upgrade that represents a significant step forward in our commitment to environmental responsibility.
Transforming Our 75,000 Sq Ft Facility
We’re replacing traditional lighting throughout our entire Burton-upon-Trent factory with cutting-edge LED high bay lights, transforming how we illuminate our 23 injection moulding machines and production areas.
The comprehensive upgrade includes high-efficiency LED fixtures with microwave sensors for intelligent lighting control, ensuring lights operate only when needed, further increasing our energy savings.
Environmental Impact Beyond Energy Savings
These new fixtures deliver exceptional efficiency, producing up to 133 lumens per watt with superior performance compared to traditional lighting systems. With their ultra-long life, these LEDs will last significantly longer than conventional lighting, reducing both maintenance requirements and waste.
The dimming sensors ensure lights operate only when needed, eliminating energy waste in unoccupied spaces.
Supporting Manufacturing Excellence
As a company producing precision components for major global brands, consistent, high-quality lighting of our manufacturing, assembly and quality control areas is essential.
The new LED system provides consistent, flicker-free illumination, improved colour rendering for accurate inspection, reduced heat generation, and instant-on capability with no warm-up time required.
Building on Existing Commitments
This project builds on our sustainability efforts that already include 100% recycled material usage in our colour-coded tamper-evident caps, closed-loop solutions to minimise waste, and efficient production methods across all operations.
Looking Ahead: Solar Power Integration
Whilst the LED upgrade marks a significant milestone, it’s just the beginning. Following our parent company Sherwoods’ successful solar power implementation, we’re developing plans to integrate renewable energy generation at our facility. By first reducing our baseline energy consumption through efficient lighting, we’re creating an ideal foundation for future solar integration. The combination of reduced energy consumption and renewable energy generation will position UB Plastics as a genuinely sustainable manufacturer.
We’ve continuously invested in technology that improves both efficiency and environmental performance. This LED lighting upgrade perfectly embodies that philosophy and will benefit our operations, customers, and planet for years to come.
